Boat Repowers in Charleston, SC

A repower means replacing the engine on a boat you want to keep. For an older hull in good shape, it can make more sense than buying another boat.

These DockWrench technicians mention repower work in their profiles. Ask each for a quote with the engine, rigging and labor listed separately.

When a repower makes sense

If the hull, transom and stringers are sound and you like the boat, but the engine needs a major rebuild or keeps failing, a repower is worth pricing. It often doesn't make sense on a boat with a soft transom or other structural problems, so have the hull checked first.

What a repower involves

Removing the old engine, checking and preparing the transom, mounting the new engine, and rigging: controls, steering, gauges, wiring, fuel lines and a propeller matched to the boat. New controls and gauges are often needed with a newer engine, which adds to the cost.

Getting a quote

The engine itself is usually the largest part of the cost, and prices vary widely by brand and horsepower. Ask for a written quote that lists the engine, rigging parts and labor separately, and ask about the engine warranty and who services it.

Engine brands covered

All brands, Yamaha Marine. Numbers in brackets show how many listed technicians name that brand. Technicians list these themselves, so confirm your exact engine when you reach out.

How booking works

  1. Pick a technician. Compare services, engine brands and service area on each profile.
  2. Send a booking request. Choose the service and a preferred date and time, and describe the problem, your engine and where the boat is kept.
  3. The technician contacts you. They confirm the time and give you a quote. You pay them directly. DockWrench charges boat owners nothing.

Common questions

Should I repower or buy a new boat?

If the hull is sound and fits how you use it, a repower often costs less than a comparable new boat. Get the hull checked and a full repower quote before deciding.

How long does a repower take?

It depends on engine availability and the rigging needed. Ask the technician for a timeline when you get the quote.
