Boat Engine Tune-Ups & Maintenance in Charleston, SC

Routine service is the cheapest way to avoid a breakdown on the water. For most outboards and sterndrives that means a service every year or at a set number of hours, plus a few habits that matter more in salt water.

Here's what a tune-up usually covers, how often to do it, what it costs and the Charleston-area technicians who offer it.

What a tune-up usually includes

On a typical four-stroke outboard: engine oil and filter, fuel filters and water separator, spark plugs, lower unit gear lube, inspecting or replacing the water pump impeller, greasing fittings, checking anodes, and a look over hoses, belts and wiring. Sterndrives add outdrive service, and inboards add belts, hoses and the cooling system.

How often

Many manufacturers recommend service every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. Check your owner's manual for your engine. In salt water, flush the engine after every trip and keep an eye on anodes and the impeller.

What it costs

Routine service on a single outboard is usually 2 to 4 hours of labor plus parts. At common marine labor rates of about $100 to $150 an hour, that often lands around $300 to $700, more for twins, large engines or sterndrives. See the cost guide for details.
